Children on the Beach

Valencia, 1860-Madrid, 1934
Date: After 1925
Dimensions: 9 x 14 cm
Materials: Oil on postcard
This scene of children having fun playing on the seashore is spontaneously captured by the brush of the Valencian artist Cecilio Pla, as a quick sketch. A postcard serves as a format on which the painter applies a monochrome base in which the thick and messy texture left by the bristles dynamizes the surface. With brief touches of color he defines lights and shadows in an accurate way to suggest the reflections of the sea and the shine of the wet skins in that fleeting moment on the shore of the beach.
