Christ Carrying the Cross Falls for the First Time

Luis de Morales
Badajoz, c. 1510 – Alcántara, 1586
Date: 1550
Dimensions: 61.10 x 54.60 cm
Materials: Oil on panel
This is a painting executed on panel at the height of the pictorial production of the Extremaduran genius.

Its composition, new and different from those found in Morales’s corpus, recalls models by the Toledo-born Correa de Vivar and the Valencian Joan de Joanes.

On the other hand, the modelling of the hands, the musculature of Christ, the rope around his neck, the aquiline nose joined to the brow, the eyes turned aside in pain, the mouth showing the teeth, and the treatment of the Saviour’s hair and ear fully correspond to Morales’s unique character.
