Head of a Girl on the Bed

Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida
Valencia, 1863 - Cercedilla, Madrid, 1923
Date: 1883
Dimensions: 45 x 35 cm
Materials: Oil painting on canvas
It depicts a girl caught between life and death. At first sight, its pictorial quality and the sensitivity with which such a delicate subject is treated indicate that this is a work executed by a great master of the 19th century. The study and technical analyses carried out confirmed that the dating of the canvas, the pigment palette, the stylistic affiliation, the technical skill and the freshness of its brushwork are undoubtedly the work of the great Valencian master of light: Joaquín Sorolla. It is, therefore, an unpublished early work by the artist, prior to his trip to Rome, which already reveals his great pictorial skills before he became a leading figure in universal 19th-century painting. This painting was attributed by the CAEM team, with the collaboration of Blanca Pons-Sorolla.
