The results obtained through this intervention have been the most spectacular of all the restorations carried out by the CAEM to date. The original work was concealed beneath an old overpainting. IR photography and radiography revealed a variety of elements hidden beneath the large floor tiles and the red dress of the figure. The restorers Villalba and Díez carried out an in-depth study until the solvents were identified, and the first cleaning tests confirmed the information provided by the multiband images, allowing us to glimpse the marvellous brocades, the character’s original hat, the scenes of aquatic birds and vegetation on the fan, the original floor tiles, the green curtains… The final result revealed an artistic quality superior to that of the overpainting and made it possible to determine the geography and period of execution of the work, which was revealed to be a marvellous painting from the Dutch Golden Age.
