Portrait of Juana Galarza de Goicoechea

Francisco de Goya y Lucientes
Fuendetodos, Zaragoza, 1746 - Bordeaux, 1828
Date: c. 1805-1808
Dimensions: 7 cm Æ
Materials: Graphite and pencil on blueprint
It is an exquisite portrait made by the Aragonese master, of his mother-in-law Juana Galarza de Goicoechea. In this excellent drawing we can see Goya’s agile and expert hand, reflected in freely but totally successful details, such as the updo of the hair or the decoration of the dress. The similarity with other family portraits made by the master is clear, such as the drawing by Javier Goya y Bayeu preserved in a private collection. The study of the work and its final attribution was extended over three years to have the review and confirmation of numerous experts in Goya’s work, culminating in a monographic publication.

Participation of the work studied in the Exhibition ‘I am Goya. The Zaragoza I lived, 1746-1775’, at the Zaragoza Fish Market, organised by the Zaragoza City Council, the Ibercaja Foundation and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Luis, in collaboration with the Royal Aragonese Economic Society of Friends of the Country and the Goya Museum.
