The CAEM team has completed the detailed study of this 18th-century Italian piece, which arrived at the centre with no documentation other than an acronym on its lower part: “B-chi/P-cho/P-tas”. The exhaustive study detected a Bolognese facture and technique, together with stylistic characteristics typical of painting from Emilia-Romagna. Following this clue, it was possible to confirm that the work is by Giuseppe Marchetti, active in the Forlì-Cesena area for much of the 18th century. Deciphering the inscription provided information about the inner history of the piece: Bazochi Parrocho Propietas. In addition to its religious symbolism, the work has technical details hidden beneath the oxidized varnishes, where the artist’s vibrant colours were concealed, used to enhance this beautiful large-format composition.
