Portrait of a Reclining Child

Vicente Borrás Abella
Valencia, 1867-Barcelona, 1945
Date: 1889
Dimensions: 17.20 x 26.80 cm
Materials: Oil paint on panel
The work depicts a child on his sickbed or, more likely, death. A subgenre of portraiture typical of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, in which the image testifies to a brief and fragile existence and no less unique and valuable for that. This small table presents a signature in the upper left corner, difficult to read, but thanks to the contrast offered by the IR photograph it is perfectly identified. The UVF image confirmed that it was not found between varnishes nor was it a later addition, as it was perfectly consolidated with the rest of the painting and its microscopic observation showed it to be consistent with those made by the artist in other works. The organoleptic analysis of the materials and of the panel of the support itself, as well as the comparative study, ensured its attribution despite the undeniable desolation that makes this intimate creation of Vicente Borrás unique.
