Saint Joseph with the Child Jesus

Círculo de Miguel Jacinto Meléndez
Date: First third of the 18th century
Dimensions: 148 x 105.7 cm
Materials: Oil paint on canvas
In this delicate representation of Saint Joseph with the Child Jesus in his arms, the father looks at his little one tenderly, while the child raises his gaze to heaven in an attitude that is more divine than earthly. This print follows the successful model of Miguel Jacinto Meléndez, although different elements related to several authors from his immediate circle can be observed in it. The pose of Saint Joseph’s hands is more typical of Alonso Cano, who in turn influenced Acisclo Antonio Palomino, a painter also from Meléndez’s circle.
