The technical analyses carried out by the CAEM research team conclude that this is a work by Francisco de Burgos Mantilla, a painter considered a follower and collaborator in Velázquez’s artistic production. It is a simpler and more austere composition, yet one of great appeal and far removed from the usual pictorial concept of 17th-century still lifes. It presents an unquestionable plastic quality, in which the painting has been applied directly, with lively and considerably free brushwork. Francisco de Burgos Mantilla may have created this work as a study in capturing nature, while also responding to the growing demand in the Spanish market for works on still-life themes.
