This is a small marvel by one of the finest painters in Latin America, Federico del Campo. Born in Peru, most of his career developed in Europe, and very few paintings are preserved in his native country, with most of his production held in private collections. He specialized in recreating views of Venice, and his paintings of the Grand Canal and the Cathedral of San Marco were highly praised. The various technical tests, the analysis of the inscriptions on the reverse and the study of old inventories made it possible to attribute the work, which arrived at the centre as an anonymous piece with no doubts about this. The identified scene is a view of the apse of the Church of the Gesù from the courtyard of the Palazzo Venezia in Rome, also known as Palazzo Barbo. This palace, in fact, served diplomatic and artistic functions, housing within it a small colony of pensionnaire artists from the Academy, among whom Federico del Campo himself was very probably included.
