Based on a meticulous study of the work, addressing both material and iconographic aspects, it has been concluded that this is probably a preparatory drawing for the creation of an engraving. The outstanding quality of execution of the piece pointed towards one of the finest artists of the Enlightenment, Manuel Salvador Carmona. Some areas that seemed doubtful in their execution were shown to have been altered by previous restorations, thanks to analytical techniques. Archival research demonstrated that the piece formed part of a Franciscan iconographic ensemble preserved at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando.
